BBP’s Affordable Housing Community
The Big Brother Project is uniquely positioned to serve individuals and families who fall within the low to
moderate-income bracket but are often overlooked by traditional housing models. These are the working-
class members of our communities—those who earn just enough to disqualify for most public assistance but
far too little to afford rising market-rate rents. The BBP housing project directly targets those earning
between $15,000 and $45,000 annually, a population that includes entry-level workers, single-parent
households, elderly individuals on fixed incomes, and people with disabilities.
Mississippi is one of the poorest states in the U.S., with a statewide poverty rate of 19.6%, nearly double the
national average. In high-priority areas such as Greenville (31.8%), Vicksburg (27.9%), and Gulfport (24.3%),
the lack of affordable housing options is not only acute—it is systemic. Families are forced to spend more
than 50% of their income on rent, leaving them with insufficient funds for food, medical care, transportation,
or education. These conditions breed generational poverty, chronic instability, and mental health stressors
that ripple throughout the community.
Despite the presence of subsidized housing programs such as Section 8 and public housing authorities, the
state continues to face a shortage of more than 50,000 affordable housing units. Many Mississippi residents
spend years on waiting lists with no guarantee of relief. Rural communities face additional barriers such as
infrastructure decay, housing discrimination, and a lack of social support services. BBP addresses these issues
with urgency, empathy, and action.
While the proposed 27-unit development is designed specifically for income-qualified individuals and
families, BBP’s broader housing strategy includes future modular and tiny home developments to serve
vulnerable populations earning under $14,000, including those transitioning out of homelessness or re-entry
programs. Our long-term approach ensures that no one is left behind. However, for this specific apartment
project, the emphasis is on families and individuals with steady, modest incomes who need stability to break
the cycle of poverty and reclaim their lives with dignity.
BBP’s focus is not merely on housing units, but on the human beings who occupy them. We recognize that
stable, affordable housing is the foundation of a thriving life, and by offering it alongside wraparound
services, we are actively rebuilding communities from the inside out.
